04/03/08 - A New York Reader Predicts That “Free Speech” Will Soon Become “Hate Speech”

A California Reader Uncovers Mexican Government Plot To Censor Information About Its Meddling In Elvira Arellano Case

From: Edgar Martinez (e-mail him)

The Mexican government under order of the Mexican Congress must publicly disclose information regarding various legal cases.

But the Mexican Federal Institute of Access to Information (IFAI) instructed the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to censor information exchanged between the Mexican government and the U.S. regarding the Elvira Arellano case,

The IFAI is afraid that if this information is made public, the media will learn how far the Mexican Government has meddled in U.S. immigration affairs, which could "affect diplomatic relations" according to Alonso Lujambio and Jacqueline Peschard, two agents from the IFAI. [La SRE deberá difundir expediente de Arellano, By Elisabeth Velasco, La Jornada, April 3, 2008]

A translation of the key paragraphs follows:

The Federal Institute of Access to Information (IFAI) instructed the Office of the secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE) to circulate a public version of the file about the activist Elvira Arellano, deported from the U.S. in 2007.

That version should include the communications between the American and Mexican governments, but would eliminate information that might ‘affect the diplomatic relations,’ between the two countries according to a proposal made by Alonso Lujambio and Jacqueline Peschard.

Lujambio and Peschard insisted on classifying data contained in the communiqués exchanged by both countries. Peschard said that this would ‘protect diplomatic relations’

“All four agents of the IFAI voted unanimously in favor of the proposal

Martinez, a first generation Mexican opposed to illegal immigration, wrote previously about the assault by Mexican police on Central American border crossers. His letter is here.
